Raw water is the untreated water that has not yet been purified or treated. This includes surface water extracted from ponds, lakes or near-surface wells and pumped groundwater. Rainwater is also part of raw water, as is bank filtrate from river water. Raw water can contain impurities such as particles, minerals, fertilizers, bacteria or pathogens. Raw water must therefore usually be treated before it can be used in the desired applications.
